The most important element for the protection of a photovoltaic installation is lightning protection. Lightning formation begins with the departure of the most powerful electric charge (leader) from the cloud to the ground. When this charge reaches a certain distance from the lightning rod, another electric charge induced by it (with reverse polarity) starts from the lightning rod to it. After a while, the two opposite electric charges meet in the air at a certain distance from the lightning rod, which forms a strong aurora – an electric arc of lightning. In this phenomenon, the distance from the tip of the lightning rod to the meeting point of the two opposite electric charges (ΔL) forms the radius of the lightning protection zone (Rp), which in turn determines the protection zone of the lightning rod with anticipatory action.
